Jazz musician Eugene “Jug” Ammons was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 14, 1925. He was the son of boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons. He was nicknamed Jug by Billy Eckstein (when straw hats ordered for the Eckstein band did not fit). After playing as a member of bands, he began a long solo career. He recorded for Aristocrat/Chess Records from 1948 to 1951. He is regarded as one of the founders of the mid-sixties soul-jazz era.
Gene Ammons died in Chicago, Illinois on July 23, 1974, from cancer and pneumonia.
