Also known as "Daddy G", James Gene Barge Jr. was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on August 9, 1926 and is a well known tenor and alto saxophonist and composer. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia. His name appears as composer on many soul and blues recordings; he also recorded for Chess Records in the 1950s to 1960s. On 31 January 1957 he played saxophone on Chuck Willis' "C C Rider". In 1961 the song "Bristol Stomp" by The Dovells made reference to "Daddy G". In the same year Daddy G was mentioned in Gary U S Bond's "Quarter to Three". In 1982 he toured Europe with The Rolling Stones.
Gene Barge died in Bronzeville, Chicago, Illinois, on 2 February 2025.
