Drummer John Mortimer Boudreaux Jnr. was born in New Roads, Louisiana on 10 December 1936. He started playing drums age 14 after moving to New Orleans with a snare drum given to him by his mother. While a student at Clarke High School he joined the band The Hawkettes. The first recording he appears on is The Hawkettes’ “Mardi Gras Mambo”, which led to him playing occasional dates with Professor Longhair and Harold Battiste. He became one of the leading session drummers in New Orleans in 1960, playing on recordings by Clarence Frogman Henry, Ernie K Doe (“Mother in law”), Chris Kenner (“Land of 1000 dances”), Lee Dorsey (“Ya Ya”), Irma Thomas (“Don’t mess with my man”) and many others.
John Boudreaux died in Los Angeles, California on 14 January 2017.
