Jazz drummer and teacher Alan Dawson was born in Marietta, Pennsylvania, on July 14, 1929. He played with the Army Dance Band while serving in Korea. He began teaching at Berklee College of Music in 1957 but suffered a ruptured disc in 1975 and having to limit his teaching to his home in Lexington, Massachusetts. He is associated with Dave Brubeck, Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, and Quincy Jones, among others.
Alan Dawson died in Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, on February 23, 1996.
