The recording “Soul Serenade” by Beau Dollar and The Coins became well known in the UK in 1966 when it was adopted as the theme tune for a radio programme by DJ Mike Raven. The recording was a cover of the King Curtis record, and was picked up by Chess for national distribution.
Musician Beau Dollar was William Hargis Bowman Jr. who was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on April 21, 1941. Bowman was a session drummer for King Records and is closely associated with James Brown. He plays drums on many of Brown’s mid-60’s King recordings. Beau Dollar played with Lonnie Mack in the early 1960s and Mack produced this recording.
Beau Dollar died in Cincinatti, Ohio, on February 22, 2011.
