Blues singer, guitarist and song writer Calvin H. Frazier was born in Osceola, Arkansas, on February 16, 1915. His first recordings were made by the Library of Congress prior to World War II. In 1935 he was involved in a dispute in Memphis, Tennessee, when his brother and another man were shot dead. His commercial recordings were made from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. He is frequently associated with Robert Johnson and Johnny Shines. He often accompanied other blues singers, notably Sonny Boy Williamson II, on recording sessions.
Wikipedia notes that “His unique style combined slide guitar work with unusual lyrics, and a vocal phrasing that was difficult to decipher”.
Calvin Frazier died in Detroit, Michigan, on September 23, 1972 from cancer. The Detroit Blues Society appealed to raise funds to mark Frazier’s previously unmarked grave with a headstone.
