The psychedelic rock group Fugi was product made by songwriter and singer Ellington Jordan (a co writer of the song “I’d rather go blind”) backed up by a Detroit rock group called Black Merda, who were also signed to Chess/Cadet.
Ellington Jordon was born in Los Angeles, California in 1940 and moved to Detroit in the 1960s to start his musical career. “I’d rather go blind” was based on his experiences in prison. The album by Fugi remained unreleased for a couple of years, but was not a success and he quit music for a while. By the 1990s he had relocated to Fresno, California, where he died age 80 on June 18, 2020.
