Walter Horton, better known as Big Walter Horton or Walter “Shakey” Horton, was born at Horn Lake, Mississippi, on April 6, 1917. He was one of the foremost players of blues harmonica. Horton replaced Junior Wells in Muddy Waters’ band for a time. Horton’s solo on Jimmy Rogers’ 1956 Chess recording “Walking By Myself” is widely regarded as his best work – and the pinnacle of blues harmonica work. Walter Horton died in Chicago, Illinois, on December 8, 1981, from heart failure.
