Nat Kendrick and The Swans was an alias for James Brown and his band, the Famous Flames, also known as The JBs. Nat Kendrick was the drummer in the band at the time. Brown was in conflict with his then record company, King, so the product was put out on another label under a pseudonym. To disguise Brown’s voice, his vocal parts were overdubbed by Carlton “King” Coleman, a local radio DJ in Miami. Musician, singer, actor, disc jockey and Baptist Minister Carlton Coleman was born in Tampa, Florida, on 20 January 1932 and died in Miami, Florida on 11 September 2010.
