“Little” Stevie Hawkins recorded two albums of gospel music for Checker Records.
The Journal of Gospel Music reports that Stevie Hawkins was born in Waco, Texas, on 14 February, 1953 and was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where his father was pastor of the Jerusalem Church of God in Christ. As a child he toured singing and opening for the Original Five Blind Boys, one of whom was his uncle. When Chess Records signed the Five Blind Boys, they also recorded Stevie Hawkins. It must have been quite exciting to be recording in the famous Chess Records studio in Chicago at the age of just 11, when his first album was released in 1964. In 1967, he enrolled in Saints Junior College and Academy, a Lexington, Mississippi, school operated by the Church of God in Christ, and entered the Ministry in the early 1980s. Thank you to his daughter Kelli for contacting us; we are sorry to hear that Mr Hawkins sadly died on 26 December, 2020.
