Peggy Jones | Chess Records/Peace and Ryhthm | tc549
Guitarist Peggy Malone, nee Jones, was born in Harlem, New York in 1940 and studied dance and opera at the New York High School of Performing Arts where she became interested in music and bought her first guitar at age 15. A chance meeting with Bo Diddley in 1957 led her to join his band as a guitarist and singer. After leaving Bo Diddley’s band (where she was known as Lady Bo, she was replaced by Norma-Jean Wofford, better known as The Duchess) she led her own band and became a sought after session musician, and can be heard on Eric Burdon’s recording “San Franciscan Nights” and recordings by Sam and Dave and James Brown. Peggy Jones died from cancer in Bouldetr Creek, California, on 16 September 2015.
