Earl Palmer | Drummer World | tc800
Rhythm and blues and jazz drummer Earl Cyril Palmer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on 25 October 1924. He is regarded as one of the originators of rock and roll music for his backbeat playing on Fats Domino’s “Fat Man”. He first appeared on stage doing a tap dance when he was five years old. He served in the US Army in Europe during World War II. After war service he studied piano and percussion at a school of music in New Orleans. In the late 1940s he began playing drums with the Dave Bartholomew band. He became a session musician and can be heard on many hits by Fats Domino, Little Richard and others. In 1957 he moved to California where he became one of the famous “Wrecking Crew” and he plays drums on The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve lost that loving feeling”. He was in great demand for session work including television work. It appears that he has drummed for everyone from B. B. King to Frank Sinatra. Mr Palmer died in Banning, California after a lung condition on 19 September 2008.
