Pioneering singer-songwriter, musician, actor and comedian Timothy Louis Ancrum "Timmie Rogers" was born on 4 July 1914. He rebelled against the traditions of the time and refused to wear blackface make up - in other words he insisted on being himself, not a caricature. Rogers was inducted into the National Comedy Hall of Fame in 1993 and it could be said that he opened the door for other performers such as Dick Gregory, Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby. In September 1949 he appeared in the first all-black artistes television programme (on CBS).He played an unusual ten stringed instrument called a Tiple. He recorded for a number of record labels during his long career. Timmie Rogers died on December 17, 2006, cause not recorded.
